Our Process

Our Process: Delivering Excellence in Specialized Coatings

At The Coatings Company, we pride ourselves on a meticulous and client-focused approach to every specialized coating project. From initial consultation to final inspection, our process ensures superior quality, lasting protection, and complete client satisfaction. Based right here in Auckland, New Zealand, we understand the unique environmental demands and regulatory requirements of our region.

Here’s how we transform your surfaces:

Initial Consultation & Assessment

  1. Your Vision, Our Expertise: We begin with a comprehensive discussion to understand your specific needs, the nature of the substrate, desired performance characteristics, and any operational constraints or timelines. This can be conducted on-site at your Auckland location, or remotely.
  2. On-Site Evaluation (Auckland Region): Our experienced technicians will visit your site to conduct a thorough assessment. This includes:
    • Analyzing the substrate condition (e.g., concrete, steel, timber, composites).
    • Identifying existing coatings and their condition.
    • Assessing environmental factors (e.g., humidity, temperature, exposure to UV or chemicals).
    • Measuring surface area and identifying any access challenges.
  3. Technical Recommendation & Specification: Based on our assessment, we will recommend the most suitable specialized coating system from our extensive range of high-performance products. This includes detailed specifications on:
    • Type of coating (e.g., epoxy, polyurethane, polyurea, fluoropolymer, zinc-rich primers).
    • Number of coats and film thickness.
    • Surface preparation methods.
    • Curing times and application parameters.
    • Expected performance and longevity.
    • Compliance with relevant New Zealand standards and regulations.

Proposal & Project Planning

  1. Detailed Quotation: You will receive a transparent and comprehensive proposal outlining:
    • Scope of work.
    • Recommended coating system and materials.
    • Surface preparation methods.
    • Project timeline and milestones.
    • Payment terms.
    • Warranty information.
  2. Project Scheduling: Once the proposal is accepted, we work closely with you to establish a realistic project schedule that minimizes disruption to your operations. This includes coordinating access, power, and any necessary site clearances.
  3. Health & Safety Plan: A site-specific Health & Safety plan (H&S Plan) is developed in accordance with WorkSafe NZ regulations. This outlines risk assessments, control measures, emergency procedures, and the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our team and any relevant site personnel.

Surface Preparation

  1. Crucial First Step: This is the most critical phase for the longevity and performance of any specialized coating. We employ state-of-the-art equipment and techniques tailored to the substrate and chosen coating.
  2. Methods Employed (examples):
    • Diamond Grinding/Scarifying: For concrete, to remove existing coatings, laitance, or contaminants and create a suitable profile.
    • High-Pressure Water Blasting: For cleaning and removal of loose material.
    • Chemical Cleaning/Degreasing: To remove oils, greases, and other contaminants.
  3. Quality Control Checks: Before coating application, the prepared surface is meticulously inspected for:
    • Cleanliness (e.g., dust, oil, rust, moisture).
    • Profile (anchor pattern).
    • Adherence to specified standards.

Coating Application

  1. Expert Application: Our highly trained and certified applicators execute the coating process with precision and adherence to manufacturer specifications. They are skilled in various application techniques, including:
    • Spray application (airless, conventional, plural component).
    • Roller and brush application.
    • Trowel application.
  2. Controlled Environment: Where necessary, we implement measures to control environmental conditions during application, such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation, to ensure optimal curing and adhesion.
  3. Multi-Coat Systems: For multi-coat systems, strict inter-coat adhesion windows and curing times are observed. Each layer is applied to achieve the specified film thickness.

Quality Assurance & Final Inspection

  1. In-Process Quality Control: Throughout the application process, our supervisors conduct continuous quality checks, including:
    • Wet film thickness (WFT) measurements.
    • Environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, dew point).
    • Visual inspection for defects (e.g., sags, runs).
  2. Final Quality Control: Once the coating system has cured, a comprehensive final inspection is performed. This includes:
    • Dry film thickness (DFT) measurements to ensure compliance with specifications.
    • Adhesion testing (pull-off or cross-hatch) to verify bond strength.
    • Visual inspection for overall appearance, uniformity, and completeness.
    • Spark testing for pinholes in specific applications (e.g., tank linings).
  3. Client Walkthrough: We conduct a final walkthrough with you to ensure your complete satisfaction with the finished project.
  4. Documentation & Warranty: Upon successful completion, you will receive project documentation, including product data sheets, maintenance recommendations, and our comprehensive warranty.

Aftercare & Support

  1. Maintenance Guidance: We provide clear guidelines on the proper cleaning and maintenance of your specialized coating to maximize its lifespan and performance.
  2. Ongoing Support: Our team remains available for any questions or support you may need regarding your newly coated surfaces. We offer advice on future maintenance and can assist with any touch-ups or further coating needs down the line.
